Picnics and Performance - Family Fun Day to celebrate waterfront improvements at Otterspool Prom

Publish Date: 15.08.2007
A family fun day, on Friday 17 August, will mark the official completion of a major facelift at Otterspool Promenade in South Liverpool.

Mersey Waterfront's Pride in our Promenades programme is a long-term project, which will ultimately revitalise promenades right along its 135km coastline. Otterspool is the first prom to benefit from the scheme, with a new entrance to the park and prom, new railings and seating, and the refurbishment of the former Garden Festival sculpture 'Sitting Bull'.

To celebrate, Mersey Waterfront and Liverpool City Council have joined up with outdoor theatre group Walk the Plank for an afternoon of Picnics and Performance. Fantastic costumes and family entertainment will be provided by groups including Larkin About, The Lifeguards, The Poppets and Artizani. The Northern Kite Group will also be on hand to showcase their talents and get people involved.

* 1.30-3.00pm - Performance for invited groups and playschemes

* 4.30-6.00pm - Performances for the general public

Jo Hayes, Mersey Waterfront's Pride in our Promenades Co-ordinator, said; "The ultimate aim of the promenade improvements is to get people of all ages out there enjoying what our waterfront has to offer. The enhanced facilities at Otterspool have helped give the park and prom a new lease of life, and this funday will combine a fantastic waterfront setting with some of the best street theatre around."

Ben Turner from Walk the Plank said; "Walk the Plank are delighted to be involved in this event. The setting and range of performances are sure to make for a fun event for all the family."

Liverpool city council's executive member for the environment, Councillor Berni Turner, said: "Otterspool Park and Promenade is a hugely important part of our waterfront, a superb green waterside resource offering, arguably, the best view of the upper estuary. Thousands more people will visit the park as a result of the improvements, and Friday's fun day will showcase what a fantastic performance space the area has become."
