Acclaimed artist Antony Gormley brings 100 iron men to Mersey Waterfront

Another Place, the spectacular sculpture previously seen in Germany, Norway and Belgium has been officially unveiled along 3 kilometres of the beach near Liverpool, England. This iconic attraction is being displayed in the UK for the first time, and can be seen there until November 2006 when it may be taken to New York.

The 100 cast iron figures each weigh 650kilos and are casts of the artist’s own body. They will be partly submerged at different times of day depending on changing tides and weather conditions.

Another Place will be displayed as part of the 135 kilometre Mersey Waterfront, which takes in a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as Liverpool’s world-famous Pier Head and England’s Golf Coast – home to the internationally famous Open Golf Championships in 2006 (Royal Liverpool) and 2008 (Royal Birkdale). 50,000 hectares of the Mersey Estuary is also internationally important for nature conservation.

Director of Mersey Waterfront, Louise Hopkins, said: “The Antony Gormley sculptures are genuinely visionary. Liverpool is looking forward to being European Capital of Culture in 2008, and securing the work of this internationally-renowned artist reinforces our claim to that title. Another Place is a valuable addition to Mersey Waterfront and we have no doubt it will attract visitors from across Europe.”

As well as exhibiting Another Place in Cuxhaven, Germany in 1997, on the shore of Stavanger, Norway in 1998, and on a river estuary in De Panne, Belgium in 2003, Antony Gormley has had major exhibitions in the USA, Mexico and Japan.
